Claude Gazier peint le cinéma jusqu’au dérèglement complet de tous les sens. Il entre dans l’écran pour éclairer les scènes de son imagination. Il ne s’agit pas de reproduire tel ou tel plan mais de le réinventer par des couleurs qui n’appartiennent qu’à lui.
Claude Gazier travaille ses « toiles » avec du sable, des agrégats de marbre, l’image se fait matière, retrouve son grain d’origine, sort du cadre qui lui avait été fixé par le cinéaste.
L’œuvre se libère de l’histoire du cinéma et le cinéma se réinvente. Claude Gazier nous offre d’y découvrir les forces secrètes qui l’animent. Les films qu’il peint n’existent pas ou, plus exactement, n’existent que par la peinture.
Ce sont des images saisies au vol d’une projection imaginaire dont l’artiste est à la fois le projectionniste, le montreur d’ombres et le créateur. C’est du réel cinématographique arraché par poignée, une illumination.
Claude Gazier travaille sous la figure tutélaire des Frères Lumière pour la précision documentaire de ses perspectives, de ses architectures et de ses cadres ; sous celle de Georges Méliès pour son extraordinaire faculté à faire vivre des êtres de lumière et de couleur, gouvernés, jaillis de l’émotion et de nulle part ailleurs.
Pour Claude Gazier le cinéma est une féerie dont il est Merlin le magicien.
